Southeast Asia’s “ladyboys” will reclaim their voices come August 2010 when Leona Lo, Singapore’s most vocal and visible transgender woman entrepreneur, writer and activist stages her one-person Ah Kua Show (AKS) at the Fringe NYC.

Ladies yes, boys no

AKS will smash the stereotype of the one-dimensional “ladyboy” from Thailand who lip synches and high kicks in seedy Bangkok tourist traps. “We are definitely ladies, but not boys,” says Ms Lo who over the past decade has devoted her spare time to reclaiming the voices of the region’s transgender women in different creative ways.

Ah Kua Show‘s New York debut is directed by Richard Chua, founder of theatre society Little Red Shop, editor of Theatrex Asia, an online overseas Chinese performing arts journal, and an invited member of the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC). Robyn Loon, a freelance theatre practitioner, is the Stage Manager.
